"We had a wonderful tour with David. We have had three sets of friends use him and all were very pleased.
He is interesting, well-informed and very flexible. Unlike many guides he lets you determine
what you want to see and adjusts the tour to your interests and specifications." Gina Milne

Welcome to the website of A Guide to Rome (formerly Roma Antica), your key to the treasures of the Eternal City. My name is David Lown and I am an art historian and writer from Cambridge, England. For the last eleven years I have been living in Rome, where I run some of the most informative and enjoyable (so my clients tell me) private tours of Rome (and Florence).

My experience of introducing people to the cultural delights of Italy goes back many years. As a lecturer in Art History, I regularly took my students on tours of all the major Italian cities. Rome, however, was always my favourite destination and in 2001 I decided to settle here permanently.

If your destination is the Eternal City, the following tours may be of interest:

  • Walk One: Explore the labyrinthine network of picturesque streets which make up the centro storico (the historical centre of Rome), taking in such sites as the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Piazza Navona and much, much more.
  • Walk Two: Discover the fascinating world of ancient Rome with a tour of the Forum, the Palatine and the Colosseum.
  • Walk Three: No trip to Rome would be complete without visiting the Vatican Museums.
  • Walk Four: St Peter's Basilica to the Pantheon.
  • Walk Five: The Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere.
The above tours are only suggestions; I am more than happy to design an itinerary geared to your own particular interests.
